One thing that hit youngsters of my age (ten) was sweet rationing, our Saturday (old) penny being able to purchase a lot but the ration did not. We were hung out to dry for the want of sweet things.
My Mother used to get peppermint juice from the chemist and somehow make chewy peppermint lumps, a poor substitute to toffee but welcome none the less.
These were stored in the kitchen cupboard, which was raided by me when I arrived home from school.
