My Great uncle George was caputured many times during the war and most of them were nere an occupied German fortress.
One time he was captured he decided that it was his last.
Inside the castle where he was being kept there were no toilet facilities apartfrom theones the nazis used. So my uncle george said he needed to use the toilet. The nazis took him in and uncle george locked the door inside. The German guard was waiting outside the door. Inside the toilet was the tiniest window which just happened to be open and had no grating on. It overhung a 70ft drop into the sea. Uncle george took off all of his cloths apart from his underware and climbed out of this window and leapt into the sea. No one noticed until the German guard broke down the door 10 minutes later.
Uncle George was never recaptured and eventually went on to be awarded the military medal for saving his whole platoon under heavy fire whilst getting injured at the time.
