This story was submitted to the People's War site by Somerset Libraries Art and Information on behalf of Mr P Hart and has been added to the site with his/her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

One morning about 8 am I arrived in London Dock. I walked down and I looked up to see a doodle bomb going across the skyline. I immediately dived into a surface shelter to take cover. In about 2 minutes this bomb came down and landed on the top of a tug which was under the Tower Bridge. It exploded and blew the tug to pieces. Everyone on board was blown to pieces and then I proceeded to my job as a messenger boy in the General Office of the London Docks. It was 1944 and I was 15 years old.
