I was 2 when the war started. My father, Desmond Papworth McKeown (known to everyone as Mac) was a squadron leader in the RAF. One of my first memories was the day my father lost his hat. That day he had to show Queen Mary around his squadron, AFC 164 (Argentine) British Squadron. He went off to the aerodrome and returned shortly in a rage because he had lost his hat. I had to hide behind the sofa while he was looking for the hat to avoid a thwack. He must have found it because I still have a photograph of him showing Queen Mary around, and he was wearing a hat.
My father was killed on 2nd September 1943, shot down while flying over Holland. Does anyone remember him, or know where the airfield was where he was based at the time of Queen Mary's visit.
