I am writing about my Granda for a history project. In 1940 or 41 300 evacuees from Newcastle came to Workington. This evacuee came from South Shields. My Granda told me that his family had to go down to St.Micheals school. There they chose their evacuee and they ticked your name and the evacuees name of the list. He said that he was a proper geordie. He said that they all seemed like nice people and played and mingled with the locals. That was until one day my Granda found a letter that the evacuee was sending home to his mam. My granda being my granda he read the letter. He was shocked to find that the evacuee was calling his mam "The She-cat". So, being only 9 or 10 he told her. So she asked if there was any other evacuees available and the evacuee was moved to another family and my granda didnt receive another evacuee
