This is not so much a story, but a recall of a childs vivid memory of a war scene.
We'd been down in the shelter in Annis Road, Hackney all night during an air raid. The noise had been so loud, the ground had shaken.
I was with my Mum Kitty and brother David. He was a baby, I was about four and a half years old. In the morning we finally emerged, went into our house, which was still standing, through the kitchen door. All the windows were gone, curtains were drifting. Mum opened the front door and as we stood there, in silence, I looked over the road where houses had been and all I could see was a white tablecloth, high up, flapping from a tree in what had been their back garden. There was just a great gap. I can't recall a sound or anything else of that moment, just the tree and the white flapping tablecloth. That has always remained so symbolic in my memory.
