Irish Guardsman Ivor White and fellow Guardsmen approach Winston's car
Encouraged by their Regimental Sergeant Major, Irish Guardsmen at Hobbs Barracks, Lingfield set off early on the morning of 8th May 1945 to 'show the flag' at the largest Victory celebration in history.
VE-Day crowds encroaching on Winston Churchill's open car, in the City of London's Parliament Square today, did Irish Guardsman Ivor White a big favour when they pushed him on to the running-board of the slowly moving vehicle.
Ivor eagerly stretched out his hand towards Winnie, and shouted the Irish Guards famous battle-cry . . . "Up, The Micks".
Grasping the Guardsman's hand momentarily, Winston replied . . . "Well done The Micks"
and a few brief seconds of history were to remain in this soldier's memory for a lifetime.
