When I lived in Croyden war time the doodle bugs used to come over regularly every night. They made a terrible noise and they weren鈥檛 very high up. When the noise stopped you knew a bomb had dropped.
I worked for Mullards experimental work for the ships. We had very good wages. I had an allotment with my sister, and a man used to help us both there. He got killed on the allotment with the doodle bug. My mum used to send me to the butchers for sixpence worth of pieces, also to the bakers for stale loaves. Everything was on rations. In my bedroom, I had candles for light. We used to have to put black material up on the windows because we couldn鈥檛 show any light anywhere. We also used to queue up for rabbits. In some parts of the house we had gas lights. We had dried eggs. We used to go to the shelters anderson when the siren went off.
