I watched the 'Holocaust Memorial Day' programme. So moving. To see and listen to some of the victims who survived. To realise what they went through, and to know that although they came through it, the horror remains with them. For me, it raised another thought. A confirmation of how I and others at the time, felt. That fighting the war was worthwhile. I was just an ordinary Sapper. No big deal. We just did as we were ordered. I was in Germany on VE Day. We knew little or nothing about the camps until we read it in the newspapers. It happened that we passed Belsen. I can still remember seeing some of the survivors standing outside. Thank God that we didn't have to go inside. These poor souls looked pathetic in their striped uniforms. The programme made me recall something that I remember at the time. That what we in the forces, those on war work and those that kept the home fires burning, were doing something that was totally justified.
