On VE or VJ night the community celebrated by having a bonefire on a bomb sight at the end of Medina Road. Islington London N7.
A piano was dragged out and someone gave me a Tuba, which I could not play, and sat me up on the piano. I somehow made an appropriate sound with the Tuba and everybody cheered and started singing and dancing, a proper knees-up. The celebrations were so loud that nobody heard whether or not I played another note.
The following morning a picture of me, sitting on the piano, blowing this tuba was on the back page of the Daily Mirror. The picture was taken from a low angle which emphasised my long thin legs which gave me the nickname Spindleshanks.
