This story was submitted by Jeff Silver at the 大象传媒 Three Counties Archive Day in Luton. He agrees to the story being included on the site, and understands the terms and conditions.

My neighbour, Eric Dudley, was a fishmonger on Luton. He volunteered for the RAF in 1943 when he was 33. He became a Squadron Leader on Lancasters.

His wife lived in married quarters in Lincolnshire. He flew on about thirty raids, but his wife never knew when or where he was going. She used to stay awake all night wondering. She would count the aircraft out, and would lie awake until she could count them back in again. Some nights there were planes missing, and she would then have to wait until she either got a phone call from Eric, or there was the dreaded knock on the door.
