The country was entreated to 'Dig for Victory' and therefore every available space was cultivated. My father dug up the lawn and planted vegetables which supplemented our diet. The only trouble was that during the winter, the only vegetable that was left standing was the cabbage, which my mother than boiled and boiled and boiled until it was like green blotting paper. Hence my hate of cabbage.
Tobacco was in very short supply and so dad grew his own, which he matured in dried milk tins in the airing cupboard, thus fumigating our underwear. One of our jobs was to cut up the tobacco leaves for him to make into cigarettes. As a joke, my brother and I added chopped elastic bands to the mixture. This resulted in a series of coughing fits and comments such as "By gum, this is strong!".
