In 1941 I was 10 years old. My older brother who was 23 was at Dunkirk. He came back and we found out that he was in Cheshire. A friend of his took us in his little car — my mother, father and sister all went. We were going along this country lane in Cheshire — there was this group of men and his friend driving the car said that my brother was there. We didn’t recognise him as my brothers hair was so blonde having been on the beaches of Dunkirk. He survived the war but we learnt later that he had been on a ship that had been bombed and ended up in the water - he'd been rescued by one of the boats.
