Raymond joined Marines 17. Corporal at 17 Sargeant 19. Coxswain on assault landing craft. Can remember earning Seven half pence in our money (danger money each day) 1/6. 1/6 a day as Coxswain on landing craft - good money back then. Landed across the straights of Meesina with troops. Stil in Sicily on VE day. Nothing happed there. Remembers when Lady Aster insisted troops wore yellow arm bands when returned to England to identify them as serving abroad and also to identify them as possibly carrying diseases - including sexual)
Len remembers when arrived at Liverpool when got on train to return to England troops used their hammocks to prepare a banner by tying them together and labelling them "Lady Aster D D Dodgers". Len received four medals - 1939 Star Italian, Star Defence Medal and Victory Medal.
Married wife Doris in 1950 after a courtship of 5 years. Married 55 years Doris died 2 months ago. Doris's family had pub in St George, Bristol - Wagon and Horses.
I'm first person Raymond has ever discussed his memories with.
