Although we lived in Orpington for the greater part of the war, my mother decided that Birmingham would be a safer area so we moved there to stay with an aunt during 1944 where we stayed until VE day. My cousin Pat and I decided to celebrate so we went down to an area close to New Street Station and joined in the street celebration joining in dancing with American servicemen. The music was provided by a couple, man and wife, the man playing an accordian. I think he knew only two songs one of which was "If you knew Susie" and whenever I hear that piece of music I am transported back to that wonderful day when I knew that my father would be safe and that we would all be able to return to Orpington. Another memory of that night is of a little dog owned by the American Military Police. The dog's name was A.W.O.L. (Absent without leave). He wore a uniform, including a helmet, was obviously the pride and joy of the men who owned him.
