My dad was a Tipton born young man at the age of 18 who joined the Royal Navy as an electrician on a aircraft carrier.
There greatest fear were the German U-Boats as aircraft carrier were slow to turn.
Well they came under attack and I remember my dad telling me how they just got out of the way of two German torpedoes with seconds to spare.
Years later my dad was took into hospital with angina. In the bed oposite him was a German who had served on a U-Boat. When the family came to visit he used to say, See him over there in that bed he used to try and kill me."
Over two weeks they became friends and on a memorble night they watched European football freindly rivalries again.
That night my dad died of a massive heart attack and the German man woke up in the morning and asked where my dad was. When he was told he wept.
To me that says it all, never mind these so called football fans with their anti-German songs. The people who served in the war and their families know the truth.
God Bless you dad, I hope you are with your friends in heaven British and German. Love your son David
