I was a young teacher in the East End during the war. On VE night we were at the ballet, watching the dancer Robert Helpmann playing the Toymaker in Copelia. He tottered on, produced a Union Jack from his pocket and tacked it to the scenery! From then on, the entire ballet was improvised around the theme of VE day- it made for some very funny viewing.

Outside the theatre hundreds of people were celebrating in a mass of lights and real fireworks. We negotiated Whitehall with some difficulty!
