This story was submitted to the People's War site by Alex Crawford on Behalf of Mrs Gamby and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs. Gamby fully understands the terms and conditions:
It was very frigtening, especially of a night time when the bombs were dropping and during the day, especially the Doodle Bug, the ones you couldn't here and the landmines. We got evacuated because there was a landmine nearby. I was sixteen when I went into the Civil Defence. We used to go round checking the air-raid shelters to check people were in there and to make sure people had their blackout curtains up properly and then we used to go out to bombed out places to see if we could find ut how many people were buried and see what help we could give.
The blackout was very frightening but we felt more safe in the blackout than we do today! We used to go down the tube first of all; Finsbury Park underground station.
It was frightening but we had some good fun because everybody joined in, we had music and sing-songs. We used to sleep down there til the morning and then bundle our bedding up and come home.
My job was making the First Aid kits so bandages and things like that. Everybody was so friendly and joined in together. Good old British spirit.
