During the war my father continued his work on the railway, this was especially needed for the movement of troops. Many a day he would return, from checking the signals and the men, with a hare or chicken and even a pig from one of the farms near the lines. Then having a chicken to eat was like a high day and holiday.
I worked as a watch repairer and had my own shop. I knew other shopkeepers and we would exchange goods, even food items.
