On June 1st 1940 I was married at St. Peter's Church Bengeworth. I was just 20 years old and Kit was 24. I remember we had the hymn Love divine All Love's Excelling . The vicar said what a contrast going from a Heritage (which was my maiden name) to a Need (which was to be my married name. We had our reception at Leicester's, The Avon Bridge Cafe I think it was called. My dad had to sign to agree to the marriage as I was under age. My wedding dress, which was blue with a pink shash was made by a friend with whom I worked, Muriel Whitely. She worked with me at Mason's but wasn't able to come to the wedding as she was working that day. My bidesmaid was Ruth Cox , who later married my husband's brother Cyril. Our honeymoon lasted only two days, which we spent in Bournemouth at a B & B. We used to walk on the beach which was covered in barbed wire, not very romantic. Bournemouth was full of French soldiers following Dunkirk. They were allowed to travel free on the buses which anoyed the English soldier who had to pay.
In August, my husband was called up. He spent 3 months in Hereford for training and was then sent to Molash in Kent. I remember the the search light and lots of bombing. I'd never experienced such kindness as I received from people when I was travelling to see my new husband on the train.
