Stayed in the Town all the war never evacuated as we thought they - Germans - would come so it would be better to be behind the fighting than in front! They would problably land in Folkestone or Dover.
Heard and saw plenty of bombs and shells the town was wrecked.
Dad was abroad most of the war (and the 1st).
Last or last but one shell that fell on Folkestone fell in our back garden. Flash of light, breaking glass then the lot came in on us. We were pulled out by two soldiers on sick leave (wounded) who later married two of my mums sisters.
Remember being shown all the boats in the harbour following Dunkirk (still in a pram) was lifted up to see over the wall.
Remeber the gliders going to Arnheim.
Remmber German pilots waving to us as they flew at roof top level to avoid the radar and get out to sea.
Had my first foreign meal - sapagetti from Italian Prisoners cutting the wheat. Saw then walking round the Town always in pairs also saw then at the pictures towards the end of the war.
Remember loads of Canadian soldiers waiting for what later became D day - we used to visit them every day - went up one day they were gone no sign left except patches of oil on the ground. Colected paper & pots and pans etc for the war effort.
Saw the first doodle bug that crashed in folkestone on way to church plenty had fallen into the sea. At school we used old wall paper sample books to learn to write as there was no paper!
Why cant kids learn today with all that is available??
Remember sweets coming off the ration - ice cream and bananas for the first time. Quite an experience a few other familes stayed in the Town (10,000 from pop of 42,000) but cant remember anyone ever being really frightened we just got on with the job learnt to grow veg.etc., wtc
