My brother and I were sleeping in the Andersen shelter when a bomb dropped only 100 yards away in our street. It hit the house of a clock collector and in the morning we woke up, having slept through everything, to find the place littered with clocks. A pair of trousers could also be seen hanging by the braces from a nearby chimney. Our mother was an Air Raid Warden so she was on duty above our shelter watching for fires while we slept below. The bomb had fallen right near another shelter but luckily the family inside were not hurt.
Each day I went by bus to the Emergency High School in Regent Street, Plymouth. At 12 years old, on days after fire bombs had been dropped I hoped that my school had been hit. One day there was a strong smell of burning books and I was convinced that my school had been hit at last. Unfortunately I was wrong, as it was a warehouse full of books that had burned, not my school.
