My name is Laura Burdis from Marden High School and I’m entering this story on behalf of Elizabeth Shannon. Who fully understands the terms and conditions of the website.
I was 12 years old when world war two started. Most nights we would just go down to the shelter at the end of the garden in North Shields for the night. We always went there in case the siren went off.
Every morning when you got out of your shelter you would ‘cringe’. This would be because you would see a boy going past with a telegram. If you received a telegram during the war it meant one of your family members had been injured, killed or was missing. You would count yourself lucky if you didn’t receive a telegram.
One day we received a telegram telling us that my older brother, Albert Shannon who was serving over seas was missing. It was a horrible experience and we all just hoped he would be found.
A couple of days later we were told he had been found. It was a great relief.
