I had an ingrown toenail and during my duties with the brigade, the gun ran over my right foot, leaving me out of combat. I was in this ward with all these chaps who鈥檇 been injured during the war and I had a tent like thing over my foot and all the other soldiers, who were really badly injured used to say 鈥淟ook at that poor fella, he鈥檚 been through hell, he can鈥檛 even walk properly with his leg, he鈥檚 been shot.鈥� Everyone used to bring over gifts; I鈥檇 share them out with the soldiers. When I was discharged from hospital they thought I was a deserter, they knocked on my mum鈥檚 door.
We where sent to Woolwich and they used to divide us up to go to different places as Military Police, guarding different places. We were classed as Regimental Police, in group 27, we went to Berry in Lancashire, at the Military College of Science, all the officers were on courses, no one authorised were allowed to pass. I was there till the end of the war, then I was demobilised.
