In 1939 when my father worked in County Hall everyone there was asked to contribute to the 'war effort'. While doing his ARP duty on Westminster Bridge he was equipped with only a broomstick - a lot of good that would have been to deal with any German parachutist who dared to descend on the metropolis of London!
