John Brown Green Howards

Mrs Noble from Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear didn't know much if anything about her father's time served during World War 2, in fact she doesn't recall any stories being told by anyone in the family and it wasn't until her mothers death she found herself in that awful position of sorting through loved ones belongings she came across things relating to her father. Things such as his war record, travel passes etc and by piecing together one or two things, doing a little bit of digging she found her father had been involved in an amazing story of struggle and hardship.
John Brown was a soldier who served with the Green Howards but unfortunately he was captured and taken to a prisoner of war camp by the Germans known as Stalag 8B. His P.O.W. number was 1856. Conditions here were not good as with many of the camps but towards the end of the war when it was becoming obvious that the end was near the Germans decided to move all the prisoners from East Prussia to Poland and sent them on a forced march which became infamous as the Lamsdorf march. Many men did not survive this march, it was long, hard and gruelling.
John Brown did survive but never did talk about it to his family.
Mrs Noble hopes that she may be able to talk to other families who had fathers, brothers or husbands on this march or who perhaps knew and remembered her father, via the discussion site.
