I was 4 years old at VE/VJ celebrations. I lived in Rayners Lane, Middlesex and not one ceiling was left in tact in our house! I wore smart grey (medium) trousers and a Persil white shirt. I had a swinging Mickey Mouse that did somersaults between two sticks on a base as my main toy. Our street party was two lines on table along either side of grass verges on the avenue in which we lived. We had cheese sandwiches, sausage rolls, jellies (the first we had seen) fairy cakes, smarties and some chocolate (last seen when a US Navy rating stayed in our spare bedroom with his 鈥榮mall brown case of guns and chocolate in 1943). Drinks were Robinson orange or lemon squash, plenty of flags and bunting. Music was by portable wind-up record player.
