In 1940 my Dad was a stretcher party member and on one occasion after a bombing raid in Sutton Surrey, he lifted a young girl of about age 5. He thought she was still alive, but unconscious. When he lifted her from the debris, he put his hand through her back. Until then, being an old soldier from World War 1, he thought that nothing could disturb him in that way, but this episode caused him to become so ill that he took to his bed for a week. He never did stretcher party again.

On another occasion at home in Carshalton, Surrey an incendiary bomb dropped in the garden. Dad came out into the garden in his pyjamas, picked up a sandbag, smothered the incendiary bomb and went back to bed!
