My name is Jean Raymond (nee Wyper) and I worked in Ardeer Munitions Factory in Ayrshire for 2 to 3 years during World War II when I was aged 18-20. I originally started work there because my mother was a widow - with not much money. We lived in Galston in Ayrshire and travelled to the factory by train. My work involved making bombs and high explosives and each night we were searched for anything metal as the last thing you want in a munitions factory is anything that would create a spark. We also wore special clothing which tied rather than had metal fasteners. The factory employed large numbers of staff. One night in 1941 while travelling home on the train from the factory we were pursued by a German aircraft attracted by the lights of the train. The next day we learned that he had dropped his payload of bombs over Kilmarnock either side of the railway line - killing and injuring people on the ground.
Another scary night we had at the factory was during a thunderstorm. The factory was protected by barrage balloons and the lightning was setting the balloons alight and they were dropping in flames all over the munitions factory.

Message 1 - Ardeer and bombing

My aunt worked at Ardeer during the war and until she retired in the 1970s. She worked in the black powder department and had to scrub her nails every night to try and clean them. As children when we were visiting we used to run to meet her off the train at Springside. It was quite an honour having an aunt who worked in such dangerous conditions. We obviously did not appreciate just how dangerous.

My husband was one of the survivors of the Kilmarnock bombing (Surviving May 1941).

I've enjoyed your memories.

My mother Jemima (Mima) Allison worked at Ardeer during the war. She lived Heatherhouse, Irvine. in 1943 she married a commando and became Mima Rusdale. Any one remember her. She is now 83 and my father 85. I am desperately trying to find photos taken during the war.

My grandmother, Mary Murdoch (nee Love), also worked at Ardeer Munitions Factory during WW2. She lived at Richardland Road and Bentinck Street, Kilmarnock. Her eldest son, David, was killed in Nov 1942 whilst serving with the Parachute Regt in Tunisia.

Both my Father John Dickie and Mother Marion Neil worked in the munitions factory during the war. My Father was a barrow boy eaning extra money. My Father had found memories of the ladies working there looking after him feeding him. My Mother worked with cordite for shells. Both are unfortunatly dead, but the memory lives on.
