In 1942 as a 16 year old travelling to work, on a bus, passed a house where a landmine had exploded. The shell of the house stood with a gaping hole in the centre, the front door had blown off and the stairs were askew. I said to the bus conductor "My friend lives there" he replied "She will be alright luv" but I knew she was not. Later that day my Mother told me that the whole family had perished, parents and two daughters. I will always remember her.
