We lived a mile or so from a searchlight unit which was active whenever German bombers were crossing the coastline on their way to bomb Hull and other industrial cities further west. As a small boy I was fascinated by the activities of this Army unit and would sometimes go missing from home in my attempts to get a closer look. On gaining access to the compound I was "challenged" by the soldiers who instantly recognised that the best way to keep me out of mischief until I was claimed was to feed me! Food was rationed in those days so the sight of apple pie and custard was as much as a small boy could dream of. Thankfully granny who was usually dispatched to retrieve me would appear only after I'd had my fill. I've been devoted to apple pie and custard ever since!
