I served looking after the merchant ships from Plymouth to Gibraltar. This was called convoy duty. The ship was called HMS Alysmer and I served 18 months on board.

After the war I also worked on an American aircraft carrier on Lease-Lend. We all thought it was the lap luxury, they had ice cream, a laundry service and bunk beds as apposed to hammocks.
