My granddad, William Poole, joined the army in 1938. He stayed working until about 1945 and longer. He was born on the 6th October 1926. He joined the REME and his number was 14451271. When he was in the army, he was to young to go abroad, so he stayed in England and guarded the coasts against the Germans. He also drove Cournels (is this spelt right?).

Both this story about some ficticious Grandad and the apalling reply are travesties and I am shocked that the editorial staff allowed these sort of things to be published as they do nothing towards the education of the young in retaining memories of war and the sacrifices made by others in order that people with nothing better to do - apparently - can mock the series.

If this Grandad had joined up in 1938 - he must have been all of 12 years old - the fact that he had an army number starting with 144... indicates to me that he was called up when he was 18 in l944.. it is doubtful that he would be driving Colonels around - no matter how it is spelled !
