I remember the air raid siren sounding twice whilst we lived in Baildon. The first occasion was one lunchtime. I was a pupil at Bingley Grammar School at the time and we all trooped round the edge of the playing fields to the shelters which were built into the slope down to the river valley. Under our allotted seat we each had a tin box which contained biscuits, chocolate and the like to sustain us in the event of a prolonged attack. I don't remember how long we stayed there or hearing the All Clear but bearing in mind it was lunch time the stay was long enough for most of us to demolish our "iron rations" before we left.
The second time the siren sounded was during the evening or night, time uncertain. We went across the road to neighbours whose house was built on a slope and who had a safe place underneath the house. My father was a member of the AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service which later became the NFS, National Fire Service)and left to go to the local fire station. I think only three or four bombs were dropped, one hitting Lingard's, a department store in Bradford, one hitting the market hall in Bradford and one hitting warehouse storing sheepskins...... What a smell!
