The following story was written on Elsie's behalf:

During the war Elsie was a housewife with a young baby. She lived with her husband in Rectory Road in Stoke. Her husband worked for Wilson鈥檚 Fruit Warehouse delivering fruit usually up to Liverpool. Her husband, Fred, remembers being in Liverpool when it was being bombed.

Elsie remembers sleeping in her clothes in preparation for sirens going off. When her husband was away and the sirens went off, she would run across the road to her mothers with her cashbox. The wardens used to make a joke of this with Elsie.

A sad memory for Elsie is when her friends were killed in their house when itr was bombed (Seymore Road). Elsie and Fred had a shelter in their garden that Fred made. She always kept valuables packed ready to take. She remembers spending long hours in the shelter. Elsie says she remembers WW2 as a frightening time and now says she often can鈥檛 believe it ever happened.
