During the war I lived nine miles from London at Hayes Middlesex, where Spitfires were made. One day a friend and I, both thirteen years old, were walking to school when a German aircraft flew over very low. His machine gun was firing and my friend pushed me to the ground, which may have saved my life. I was just shaken up with a couple of bruised knees. We thought that as we had been wearing blue uniforms we might have been mistaken for RAF personnel.
During the bombing we spent most nights in an air raid shelter. Some weeks we only went to school in the morning and the next week only in the afternoon. This was because there were not enough shelters near the school for everybody.
One particular time a bomb fell in our street right under our bay window, but it didn鈥檛 go off. The whole street was evacuated and we spent two days staying with friends until it was safe again.
