My Nan and her little brother Tom were evacuated together to a farm. Their host family made them sleep in the barn. They were so home sick they tried get back to Liverpool by themselves.
Nan tried to use the public telephone in the village to ring her mum but she didn鈥檛 have any money so the operator wouldn鈥檛 connect her. She wrote a letter asking her mother to come and get them but there was no money to buy a stamp. They gave up and started to walk home. Tom and Nan were crying when a truck load of G.I.鈥檚 stopped to ask where they were going and why they were so upset.
My Nan told him the story and the G.I. said they were on their way up to Liverpool for training, and that they would make the delivery. My Nan gave him the letter and he gave them a bar of chocolate to share.
When Nan and Tom got back and were told off because they had chocolate all over their faces and they got told off again because they wouldn鈥檛 say where it had come from. They got told off some more when the post office lady told the family how they had tried to post a letter and use the phone without any money or permission. They were sent to bed early and Nan said they both cried as it was the worst night away from home.
The G.I. must have kept his promise as a few days later a letter arrived from Nan鈥檚 mum, ordering them home, with money for the train fares. She met them at Liverpool Lime Street Station but she was so horrified at how scruffy Nan and Tom were that she made them walk a few steps behind her all the way home.
