It was 1942 and Uncle George`s leave was nearly over. My mum, who had a soft spot for her younger brother, was not at all happy about his departure. We all went off to Cosham Station together. As the train steamed in, Uncle George hugged us both and jumped on board. My mother started to cry. I thought to myself This is serious, and so I joined in. The station master came along waving his green flag, and slowly Uncle George and the train disappeared from view. "Never mind my love" said the station master, "Your daddy will soon be back" "He`s not my daddy" I sobbed, "he`s my uncle" I knew I`d said the wrong thing by the ensuing silence, but it was years before I realised what!
PS The station master was right. Daddy DID come back from the war. And Uncle George? Nearly 90 and still going strong!!
