Not so much a story - more a series of snippets. I write on behalf of my father, who won't [like many with war experience] tell his own story. It takes a generous amount of whisky and an appropriate ambiance to get him talking, so the inconsistencies and mistakes are mine.
1939 saw my father stationed in Kenya. Prior to the declaration of war he was sent [in rank of corporal]with others to patrol northern border with Italian Somaliland & Ethiopia. One of those with him was Ivor Broome, later of senior rank.
When war started they crossed the border to establish forward airfields inside Italian territory. They went in on foot carrying supplies on camels. One 'cameo' which captured my imagination was that they caught sharks from the shore with baited hooks - although I'm unsure if this was for 'sport' or because of resupply problems.
Later the air war started...and that, I intend, will be 'Snippet2'
