Grandad ever prudent had an Andersen Shelter in the garden but this particular day they were going about their business as usual. Grandpa being a night worker slept in daytime hours and because of the bombing usually slept on the living room floor preferring not to go upstairs to sleep.
Bexleyheath is close to Biggin Hill Aerodrome, London and certain strategic industries along the nearby Thanmes, so it saw a lot of aerial activity. On this day the germans were bombing London but they decided to hit my grandparents area too. Before they could escape to the shelter a bomb exploded flattening a pair of semi's across the road from them, The force of the blast caused the "maid saver" cabinet to be thrown across the kitchen where it fell on top of my grandmother causing her severe lacerations. She was lucky not to lose an arm and carried the scars for the rest of her life. Fortunately no-one else was hurt or killed in the explosion. The houses were eventually rebuilt but were not in the original style.
