My brother and I lived on Aylsham Road, Norwich. We went to Sunday School one day and when we came out we walked to the Boundary to a shop called Wyrells which is now Kerrisons Toy Shop. I must have been 8 or 9 and my brother Ronnie 11 or 12. We saw a plane on fire coming towards us and my brother pushed me into a privet hedge near the Boundary Public House. The plane crashed behind the pub into two houses on Spinks Road killing all the arimen and three small children. A friend of mine was hurt.
They now have a placard on the house which was rebuilt. The families of the American airmen came over for a memorial service at the house and put the placard there.
I remember having to put gas masks on every day in assembly - it was awful and I hated it - they smelled like rubber.
All the children who didn't have dads had parties put on by the Americans. We were also given a present at Christmas by the headmaster at school (Norman Infant & Junior School).
