Joyce remaining in Washington
Until Nov. 1944
Living life normally, working exceptionally long hours, 6陆 days per week, but
managing a few days break mid 1943 at Middleburg Va. Transferred residence to an
apartment in Takoma Park in Jan. 1944.
1944
June
Programme of ships refitting and near construction practically completed and staff
reduced to skeleton staff. I was retained pending arrival of our baby.
26th July
Safe delivery of son, Paul.
13th Nov.
By this date I was content to be on my way and (along with a colleague, his wife and
their 3 month old) were earmarked to travel on the Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier Ravager.
My friend Bernard and I were part of a squad of some 60 on transit to Portsmouth
Barracks. Whilst the ladies and babies were well cared for, we were far from happy.
Bernard and I were due to go straight to Portsmouth Barracks, this meant Joyce being
left to cope not only with Paul, but with 15 pieces of luggage. Eventually we got 24
hours breakage of draft from the generous Commander. I think the alternative would
have been A.W.O.L.
