I remember the excitement when the war was drawing to a close and we expected peace to be declared almost any day. We were listening to the broadcasts on the radio waiting for the official announcement and the day the announcement came we were at school and we were told in the school hall. I think we were given the day off and we all ran home and started the celebrations which would be the VE day celebrations. People were organising street parties and I remember tables down the middle of the street and somehow or other parents had managed to get buns, sandwiches and jellies and there were flags everywhere. Goodness knows where they got them from but they appeared in the street. It just seemed an extremely happy time. A feeling of relief that it was at last over, although of course there was still the Japanese war to finish. But the war on our doorstep was over and we could sleep in our beds again instead of the air raid shelters. And I suppose you could go back to having a normal childhood.
