I was a school girl during the war and my mother was told that German planes couldn't bomb Great Malvern because they would be so busy climbing to get over the hills that they couldn't drop their bombs, or if they dropped them the other way they would miss Malvern. Because of this I was sent to Malvern Girls' College as a boarder to get me away from the bombs. That's how I got to boarding school, just because of that story. It did seem to be safe as I was there for five years and we didn't have any bombs.
The intersting thing was in Malvern there was HMS Drake which was the training centre for the navy. There was also an collection of free French soldiers in one of the biggest hotels. We couldn't meet them though. We had a very distinctive maroon uniform with hats you see, and if of the Malvern hats were seen in town or anywhere were we shouln't have been, all the old ladies, the residents of the town, would report us! If we took our hats off, the rest of the uniform was just as distinctive, and we were reported again which was even worse! So, I think the old ladies were great guardians of all the school girls!
