My father in law recollected that he spent his 21st birthday seeing his first action of WW2 in a tank in Normandy area. He also spoke of Caen and on one day his was the only tank to return from his unit.

What a way to grow up - and how quickly to have to do it! Many other lads were no doubt having to face up to things just as quickly and not all would come through.

He survived but never forgot the mates he left behind. He passed away last year aged 80 years. For his tomorrow they gave their today.
