I was one of a crew of 5 in a tank. I was the driver and we had to cross the River Orle. It was all quiet in the morning but in the afternoon our squadron of about 80 tanks were attacked by a Panzer division of say 300. We were not much more than civilians - we'd only been in the army a few months. I was 18 but we felt the Germans were battle hardy. They knocked out 50 odd tanks and there were only about 30 left. About 10 people got killed. When a tank gets hit the missile splinters and many more soldiers were injured. I was one of the fortunate ones and escaped injury. But I was very scared. Luckily we had enough tanks to form a composite squadron and we continued to fight until 1945.

Message 1 - Crossing the Orle

Posted on: 11 August 2005 by Trooper Tom Canning - WW2 Site Helper

Sir,
there would appear to be a slight mis calculation in the relative amount of tanks per British Squadron and a German Panzer Division.Even a British armoured squadron never had more than 21 Tanks (81 per regiment) as opposed to the Assualt Tank Brigade squadrons of 19 Tanks(57 per regiment)
The normal Panzer Divison was of two Tank brigades with possibly 150 Tanks per division, plus a brigade of Panzer grenadiers, artillery,SP 88mm Guns etc
The British Armoured Divs e.g 6th Armoured had only one Brigade of Tanks( 75 Tanks)one Recce battalion of light tanks, and one Brigade of Infantry, usually motorised 24th Guards Bde, artillery etc.
These establishments changed over the war years but it was not on that a squadron would have 80 Tanks !
