My Granny was working in the civic centre in Southampton. Southampton was an obvious and repeated target of bombs.
There was a shelter at the civic centre where everyone was supposed to go when the air raid warning sounded. However, if you had not finished your work when the warning sounded, you would have to return and finish up after.
One afternoon the warning sounded, my granny was typing up a complicated document. Her friend came over and said " come on, let's just stop and go to the shelter." my granny said "no, I don't want to come back, I'll just finish this" her friend sighed, but waited for her. After she finished they rushed towards the shelter.
As they got near, everyone started running the other way, "get away, the shelter's been bombed!"
Everyone was killed in the shelter, including a school group.
Lucky for my granny and her friend.
I wouldn't be here today, if she wasn't so averse to working late!
