1941 brought was to the USSR and the US. To this day the invasion of Russia still seems inexplicable. Do madmen like Hitler learn any lessons from history.
The progress of this conflict was brought alive by newsreels, news bulletins and newspapers; it was horrifying by any standards.
At home we were subjected to periodic air raids. The royal navy and merchant navy kept us provided with food and materials they have never received full acknowledgement fro their bravery. Our army gradually took command of the land battles. Incidentally, scenes on railway stations on the arrival and departure of troops are still poignant.
The attack on Pearl Harbour came as a complete shock. It was quite despicable by any standards. As a result of this action, American troops 鈥渋nvaded鈥 our shores. They came as a shock. Their easy-going, friendly and amiable manner brought some light relief.
As for myself, my education continued until I sat my school certificate examinations with some success.
The celebrations for VE-Day and VJ- Day were fantastic. Everything that took place was amazingly spontaneous. Servicemen and civilians alike were tired/worn out after years. I still find it difficult to understand the stoicism of the general public.
However, I get annoyed and occasionally furious. When the underage armchair critics tell us what we should /shouldn鈥檛 have done at critical times.
War dehumanises all involved. The memories never go away completely, the behaviours of the Nazis, fascists and Japanese was truly unbelievable. We should never forget.
