Because of the war, Violet was evacuated from Folkestone to Burcombe. She worked at the NAAFI, Newcomb Lines Larkhill for two years. Mr & Mrs Croft got her a job on the railway at Epsom, first as a cleaner and then as a porteress. She had to release pigeons from their baskets when the train came into the stations and then write down the times at which they were released. One day, a trainload of Germans pulled into the station and she was very glad when the train departed due to the hard expressions on their faces. At that time, she was in lodgings with Mr & Mrs Croft in Epson but Mr & Mrs Croft had to return to Folkestone where their boarding house, Shangri-la had been bombed.
