VE DAY PARTY IN BRISTOL. MAY 8TH 1945 Derek's mum, Ruby is the 5th lady on the left.
Mr Derek Gay was at this party on 8th May 1945 in Bellvue, Clifton - he was aged 7. His brother aged 10 is at the back with his group of friends. His mother, Ruby, is also in the picture - she helped with all the catering. Derek called all the ladies in the street ‘auntie’ because it was such a close knit community.
He lived in this road until he was 12. The road had just ONE car in those days.
All the houses in the street had wine cellars and these were used as shelters when Bristol was under attack.
In winter they lived in one room to save on heating. To rent the flat it cost 10 shillings per week.
